Generator safety

By South Whidbey Fire/EMS Chief Nick Walsh

During severe weather events, many people in our community rely on portable generators to keep their homes powered. While generators can be extremely helpful, they also present serious safety risks if not used correctly. Every year, we respond to house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning emergencies caused by improper generator use.

To stay safe, always place generators at least 20 feet away from your home. Be sure the exhaust is directed away from the structure and cannot enter through open windows, doors, crawl spaces, or vents. Never operate a generator inside a home, garage, or near openings—even if doors or windows are open.

Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and deadly. Taking a few simple precautions can prevent a tragedy and keep your family safe during power outages. When in doubt, stop and reassess your setup—safety should always come first.
