About us

How we work

YOU are critical to the success of south Whidbey residents being resilient and prepared for the inevitable disaster. It will take us ALL working together to survive and then thrive as we rebuild. No matter your skill or the amount of time you have to contribute, you can make a difference. As the adage goes, “it takes a village” and that includes you.

If you love meeting new people and organizing friends and neighbors, perhaps you will become a neighborhood “champion.” You can gather neighbors around the hearth, share your enthusiasm and enlist their participation. You probably already know exactly what to do, but there are resources to inspire and support you on our champions page.

Perhaps you simply want to provision your own household for starters. Ideas abound on the internet. We have our own suggestions for how you prepare a home and what you should stock-pile.

We’re here to support your neighborhood

Our organization structure consists entirely to enable and support Champions and the success of the Neighborhoods. This is a “bottoms up” operation with the minimal organization structure necessary to achieve our mission. Champion and Neighborhoods are at the top, where accountability and responsibility reside. It’s through working together, by building trusting relationships and collaboration that we will prepare ourselves for inevitable disasters.

The Core Team consists of 15 individuals who are passionate about this vision. We meet monthly to plan communications and Champions’ meetings, nurture our many various partnerships, plan events, and build our Working Groups. If you like to write, edit, communicate on social media, organize, write grants, or strategize and lead, consider joining our Core Team. The door is wide open.

If you have particular special skills—medical, radio, drone, provisioning, teaching, working with schools and small businesses, domestic and field animal care, growing food, mapping, church preparedness/resilience—you might like to join one of our Working Groups. Again, all are welcome and valued.

The South Whidbey Prepares Core Team meets monthly. This team works to keep things coordinated between groups and keeping things on track.

Our approach is facilitative: we nurture relationships, build collaboration through mutual trust, and learn alongside our neighborhood champions. There is no expert-driven hierarchy to impose. Instead, we walk together as companions on a shared learning journey. Everyone has something valuable to offer, and everyone is genuinely valued..
